Emulators vs.effects pedals and tube amps

- how many of you have played or tested a Mesa-Boogie Mark 4 or Heartbreaker?
or a Fender Blackface twin reverb or deluxe reverb? or a vox, matchless or
a plexi marshall?

The same question can be asked regarding effects pedals and guitars.

Certainly 1 among 500 guitar players would be yes, and even that one
would probably be a music shop sales person in New York or London.

That's the idea behind tube amps emulators and effects pedals.

Being both a musician and an electronic technician, I have had the oportunity
to check many of these pieces of equipment and from my experience, amp
simulators don't live up to 30% of their promisse. The other important thing is that
the press seldom ommit or distort the facts about the use of SMD (superficial
mounting device) used in the construction of amps and pedals and their 1000
functions despite the small size.

Get ready! on the way are pedals, amps, and emmulators that pay your bills... the end is near.

SMD refer to miniature components that can reduce 5 or 10 times the traditional size.
This technology apeared in the computer and communication industries, allowing for much smaller
equipment, such as mp3 players, digital cameras. What turns out is that for music, SMd components
have inferior quality compared to their normal size counterparts. For example, the infamous JRC4558
which in traditionalypackaged version produces 800mW, only produces 250mW in SMD version.

"SSop8" smd and the traditional sip8.

translating, in the SMD version of your pedal, simulator, or even amplifiers, you will have
less bass response, and the sound degrades quickly after only minutes of use.
The other advantage is that traditional components are much easier for mantainence
allowing for easy interchange of components while SMD based equipment are usually very
dificult to identify problems and hard to replace components, reducing the life span of
the equipment. Your computer motherboard is SMD based, it certainly won't support very
heavy maintainence, and component replacement (we ususly buy another one!!).
